Lawmaker Condemns Correctional Services Department: Cold Meals Provided in Cold Weather

Detainees in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, where many protesters of the anti-extradition movement were detained, recently complained that lunch boxes provided were “icy cold” and hence, some of them suffered from diarrhea after eating. Democratic lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting issued a letter to the Commissioner of Correctional Services, Wu Ying-ming, requesting follow-up of the meal arrangements and making improvements immediately.

Lam condemned the Department for ignoring prisoners’ rights. He was concerned about food safety and dissatisfied as the weather is getting cold. Lam said, “receiving warm and clean meals is basic human right and right of a prisoner.”

Wong Ho-ming, member of the League of Social Democrats, said that 80 protesters were arrested on December 20 last year, and were detained at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. The Centre mainly accommodates male arrestees and it is a transfer station for prisons and houses prisoners awaiting admission.
