Hong Kong Protests in the Virtual World

Hong Kong gamers started mimicking the real-life actions of hardcore protesters by wearing the yellow helmets, gas masks, and black-clothing, throwing petrol bombs, vandalizing train stations and attacking police in the video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V.

Mainland Chinese gamers quickly called on other players to defeat the “Hong Kong Cockroaches”, and dressed their characters as riot police with wielding guns. On several occasions, the Chinese gamers defeated the Hong Kong players with water cannon and tear gas.

Chang, a player from Hong Kong, did not mind losing the game. He aimed to use the game to promote awareness towards the protests in Hong Kong, he said, “(GTA) is a fun way to encourage people with different viewpoints to discuss, since you can have up to 30 strangers on a server that may not know much about Hong Kong.”
