According to Major General Yin Zhuo, the number of carrier-based aircraft that China’s next domestic carrier can carry will exceed 60. China’s future carrier-based aircraft will also be J-20 and J-31, and the new aircraft carrier will use a combination of fourth-generation and fifth-generation aircraft. Yin Zhuo said that in the future, China will use the characteristics of J-15 carrier-borne airborne bombs to carry out land-to-sea attack missions, and the J-20 and J-31 stealth aircraft will perform “Kick Door” operation.
According to public information, the third China-built aircraft carrier under construction at the Jiangnan Shipyard is considered to be the second-generation aircraft carrier developed by China. The biggest feature is the further increase in size and the use of catapults to take off carrier aircraft. From the back view published by CSSC, the next domestic aircraft carrier uses a large beveled straight deck. It is possible to use 3 electromagnetic catapults and 2 lifts. It is speculated that the displacement of this aircraft carrier will reach about 80,000 tons, and the number of carrier-based aircraft that can be carried exceeds 60. Equipped with an electromagnetic catapult not only makes the carrier-based aircraft more efficient but also enables the fixed-wing carrier-based early warning aircraft to be launched. This will greatly enhance the information acquisition capability of the Chinese carrier battle group, and its comprehensive combat effectiveness will reach more than three times that of the “Shandong Ship”. The third carrier is believed to still use conventional power, and it will take a long time for China to develop a nuclear-powered carrier.
Another major change for the third aircraft carrier is a breakthrough in carrier-based fighter jets. China’s current carrier-based aircraft is the J-15. Compared with the United States, Britain and Japan and other countries equipped with F-35 stealth carrier-based fighters, there has been a generational difference in performance. It is reported that China is currently choosing between the Chengfei J-20H carrier-based aircraft and the FC-31 carrier-based aircraft, and eventually one will become China’s next-generation carrier-based stealth fighter. Previously unconfirmed news said it will use the J-20H fighter. It is worth noting that it takes at least five years for the development and maturity of a type of carrier-based fighter to be mature, which means that China will not deploy stealth carrier-based fighters anytime soon.
In the future, China will likely have four aircraft carriers within five years, including two Liaoning ships and Shandong ships, two 001 domestic carriers, and two 80,000-ton class 002 domestic carriers. In fact, in addition to the construction of aircraft carriers, China’s more urgent task at present is to develop stealth carrier-based fighters. After all, the carrier’s combat effectiveness is mainly achieved by carrier-based fighters, and China does lag behind in this area.
