European Parliament Awards Top Rights ‘Sakharov Prize’ to Uighur Dissident Ilham Tohti

The daughter of jailed Uighur intellectual Ilham Tohti received the European Parliament’s top rights prize — Sakharov Prize — on his behalf on Wednesday as Tohti was sentenced to life imprisonment and prohibited from visiting, according to RTHK.

Jewher Ilham said: “My father created a website to create a platform for Uighurs, Chinese and other minority people to post articles and their understanding freely on the website and join discussion forums.”

The EU’s diplomatic chief Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, tweeted on Dec. 18, expressing his support

Human rights are universal. Wherever they are threatened, the EU will always be there to uphold, stand up and take action for human rights. We will continue supporting those who fight for human rights, all around the world.

The parliament hailed the former economics professor as a “voice of moderation and reconciliation“, when it announced the award in October, while Beijing condemned the move, calling Tohti a “terrorist”.
