Clive Hamilton, the author who brought us “Silent Invasion: China’s influence in Australia” is releasing his new book “Hidden Hand: Exposing How The Chinese Communist Party Is Reshaping The World” on July 3rd.
In “Silent Invasion” Hamilton outlined how, from politics to culture, real estate to agriculture, universities to unions, and even in our primary schools, there is compelling evidence of the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration of Australia. Sophisticated influence operations target Australia’s elites, and parts of the large Chinese-Australian diaspora have been mobilized to buy access to politicians, limit academic freedom, intimidate critics, collect information for Chinese intelligence agencies, and protest in the streets against Australian government policy. It’s no exaggeration to say the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and Australian democracy are on a collision course. Is it any wonder the CCP desperately tried to squash its publication.
In his new book “Hidden Hand” Clive Hamilton delivers his thesis that the infiltration work of the CCP in Canada poses particularly difficult problems. There has been a well organized and systematic attempt by the CCP to reshape the World order, Hamilton says. Attitudes by the elites, as well as media elites, who courted the CCP since the ’80s have proved to be dangerously wrong. Because of their business and personal relationships, they have become entangled mentally in a favorable perception of China’s 5000-year traditional culture which does not conform with the reality of the CCP as regime built on Leninist principles. This naiveté has proved difficult to shake off in the face of mounting evidence of the CCP’s brutality and cold calculations.
“The CCP’s big network of influence – because after all, it was a way in which the CCP was systematically setting out to build these relationships as a way of exerting political influence – has had a crippling effect on Canada’s understanding and response to China in recent years.”1 This explains why the Canadian Government has been reluctant to criticize the CCP for its handling of the Coronavirus outbreak, for their blackmail of taking two hostages in response to the detention of Meng Wanzhou, HuaWei’s chief financial officer, for co-opting the UN and WHO to do their bidding, for the brutal and illegal crackdown on peaceful protesters in Hong Kong, and their menacing actions in the South China Sea in contravention of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Hamilton concludes that only a groundswell of public opinion can result in the necessary pushback against the CCP regime’s influence in Canada. If the latest polling is an indication this backlash is now emerging. Angus Reid Institute established that Canadian views towards the CCP are in apparent free-fall, as favorability of the regime hits a new low, dropping to 14 per cent.
Hamilton’s new book will land like a bomb among the Canadian media, political and business elite.
