The Third Session of the Thirteenth National People’s Congress  at the press conference hall of the Great Hall of the People at 3 pm on May 24 (Sunday), had  State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi  answered questions regarding  “Chinese foreign policy and foreign relations”.

China International Television reporter: China-US relations are becoming increasingly tense. The opinion polls show that the popularity of the American people has reached a record low. China and the United States may accelerate decoupling and even break out of conflicts. What do you think of this? Are you worried about the further deterioration of China-US relations?

State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi: CGTN is an international channel. We welcome more foreign friends into the CGTN family. The relationship between China and the United States is an international focus. At present, the United States has become the country with the worst epidemic in the world, and every day innocent lives are taken away by the virus. We deeply sympathize with the misfortunes suffered by the American people and sincerely hope and wish the American people to overcome the epidemic as soon as possible and resume normal production and life as soon as possible.

The new pneumonia epidemic is the common enemy of China and the United States. Mutual support and assistance are the common wish of the two people of country. At the beginning of the epidemic, many American societies, businesses, and people reached out to China. After the United States fell into the epidemic, the Chinese government, localities, and people also actively returned, donating substantial medical supplies to the United States. We also provide support and convenience for the United States to purchase medical supplies in China. More than 12 billion masks have been exported to the United States, which is equivalent to providing nearly 40 masks for each American.

Unfortunately, in addition to the raging of the Coronavirus, a political virus is also spreading in the United States. This political virus is to use every opportunity to attack and discredit China. Some politicians have ignored the most basic facts and made too many lies and plotted too many conspiracies against China. Recently, people have compiled these lies into a book and published them on the Internet. If there are new lies, these records will continue. The longer this lie is recorded, the lower the moral level of the rumors and the more stain it will leave in history.

I want to declare that the parties should not waste precious time, and should not ignore fresh life. What China and the United States need to do the most is to first learn from each other and share their experience in fighting against the epidemic, and help each country fight against the epidemic; The second is to comply with the expectations of the international community, jointly participate in and promote multilateral cooperation in the fight against epidemics, and play an active role in the global fight against epidemics; the third is to focus on the long-term epidemic situation and the normalization of prevention and control, and how to reduce the impact of the epidemic on the economies of the two countries and the world economy to carry out macro-policy coordination and communication.

As for the current status and prospects of China-US relations, China has always advocated that, as the world ’s largest developing country and the largest developed country, we all bear great responsibility for world peace and development. We should be responsible for humanity, history, take a responsible attitude towards the people, take seriously and properly handle China-US relations. Cooperation between China and the United States will benefit each other, but fighting is hurting each other. This is the most brilliant summary from various experiences and lessons in the past decades, and it is worth keeping in mind for both of us.

China and the United States have different social systems, but this is a choice made by the two countries of people and should be respected by each other. There are indeed many differences between China and the United States, but this does not mean that there is no room for cooperation. Almost all global challenges in the world today need to be coordinated by the two major powers, China and the United States.

China is willing to build a coordinated, cooperative, and stable China-US relationship in the non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation. At the same time, we must also safeguard China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, safeguard its own right to legitimate development, and safeguard the status and dignity won by the Chinese people. China has no intention to change the United States, or replace the United States, and the United States cannot change China wishfully, nor can it stop the 1.4 billion Chinese people from moving toward modernization.

Now we must be vigilant that some American political forces are abducting China-US relations and trying to push China-US relations to the so-called “new cold war.” This dangerous approach is a historical reversal, which will not only ruin the years of cooperation between the two countries. The achievements will also damage the future development of the United States itself and endanger the stability and prosperity of the world. People of both countries should stand up to stop it.

Again, for the fundamental and long-term interests of China and the United States, and for the future and well-being of mankind, China and the United States should and must find a country with different social systems and different cultural backgrounds to coexist peacefully on this planet for mutual benefit. That is the way for both to win.
