May 22, 2020– The Communist China Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian held a press conference.
ThePaper.cn News Reporter: the Trump administration recently submitted a so-called strategic report to the U.S. on China in accordance with the U.S. “Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2019”, describing the Trump administration’s implementation of the 2017 “U.S. National Security Strategy” over the past two years. The report said that more than 40 years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, the U.S. engagement policy with China has not reached the desired goal of changing China, China poses a multifaceted challenge to U.S. national interests, and the U.S. continues to take “all-government response measures” against China. What is China’s comment on this?
Zhao Lijian: This U.S. report, like “the U.S. National Security Strategy” released in 2017, deliberately distorts China’s political system and strategic intentions, hypes the “China threat” and uses it as an excuse to advocate a tough policy of continuing to exert all-round pressure on China. In response to a series of wrong words and deeds by the United States over the past two years that interfered in China’s internal affairs and harmed China’s interests, the Chinese government has repeatedly stated its solemn position and made a firm and forceful response. It has been well documented that the United States, in its policy practices of cold war thinking and prejudice, made fundamental mistakes from the outset and was doomed to failure. I would like to emphasize the following points:
First, more than 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese people, under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, have come out of a development path suited to China’s national conditions, achieved great achievements that have attracted worldwide attention, and made positive contributions to promoting world peace, stability and development. History and reality show that the development path chosen by the Chinese people is entirely correct, and we are highly confident about it. We will unswervingly continue to follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics and continue to achieve greater new victories. No one can stop China from growing.
Second, the history of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States for more than 40 years has fully demonstrated that China and the United States can cooperate for mutual benefits, but if they fight it will hurt each other, and cooperation is the only correct choice for both sides. China and the United States could not change each other and could not replace each other too. the U.S. report so-called “U.S. engagement policy to China failure”, “reform China failure” is nonsense. As two major countries with different national conditions, mutual respect, equal treatment, seeking common ground while keeping differences are the strategies needed to get along. The U.S. also said in the report that it does not seek to curb China’s development, and we urge the U.S. to agree with its words and deeds and respect China’s core interests and major concerns, rather than saying one thing or doing another thing.
Third, China’s policy towards the United States is consistent and clear. We are committed to working with the United States to achieve non-confrontational, mutual respect and win-win cooperation. At the same time, we firmly defend national sovereignty, security and development interests. Dialogue and cooperation, we welcome; curb the crackdown, we resolutely fight back, the United States will not succeed.
Fourth, China-U.S. relations are at an important juncture. A stable and continuous development of China-U.S. relations is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and is the universal expectation of the international community. We urge the U.S. to abandon cold war thinking and Ideology prejudice, conform to the trend of the times, look at China-U.S. relations objectively and rationally, immediately stop any interference in China’s internal affairs, harm China’s interests and undermine China-U.S. relations, and work with China to push bilateral relations back to normal development.
