The world’s top medical journal “The Lancet” published an editorial entitled “Reviving the US CDC” (The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) on May 16, 2020. The editorial severely criticized the U.S. government for suppressing the CDC and called for “replacement of Trump.”
The editorial mentioned that “In the decades following its founding in 1946, the CDC became a national pillar of public health and globally respected”. But now “…….has seen its role minimized and become an ineffective and nominal adviser……”
The editorial attributes “the strained relationship between the CDC and the federal government CDC” to “conservative politics” and blames that “The Trump administration further chipped away at the CDC’s capacity to combat infectious diseases.”
The editorial believes CDC’s mistakes on early stage of pandemic is because that “staff in China were cut back with the last remaining CDC officer recalled home from the China CDC in July, 2019, leaving an intelligence vacuum when COVID-19 began to emerge.”
The editorial criticized U.S. current policies on the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Administration is obsessed with magic bullets—vaccines, new medicines, or a hope that the virus will simply disappear. ”
The editorial warns that “the Trump administration’s further erosion of the CDC will harm global cooperation in science and public health……”
In the last, this article pleads “Americans must put a president in the White House come January, 2021, who will understand that public health should not be guided by partisan politics.”
Shortly after “the Lancet” editorial was printed, the National Public Radio (NPR) published an article titled “Replace Trump and Bolster The CDC, A Leading Medical Journal Urges”. NPR has interpreted this editorial as “Americans should oust President Trump from the White House and elect a leader who will support – rather than undermine – public health experts who are battling the COVID-19 pandemic”.
The Lancet, as the prominent British medical journal, keeps publishing articles to plead for CCP and blacken Trump Administration. Richard Horton, editor-in-chief, in an interview with CCTV on 1 May said it is “useless, incorrect to blame China for the coronavirus origin”, and “disappointing to see American politicians giving credence to conspiracy theories and promoting unproven treatments.” We would like to ask him: Is it appropriate for a medical journal to publish editorials with such strong political pursuance?
