On February 24, a 70-year-old man was found dead in his home in Shiyan, Hubei. His 6-year-old grandson had been guarding his dead body alone for three days surviving on cookies. The child told the person who found him: “Grandpa warned me not to go out because of the virus…”
According to staff members from a nearby community hospital, the old man had been living with his grandson. The two were seen together buying medicine before the Chinese New Year.
With high blood pressure and diabetes, the old man was not in good health. His death was discovered during a routine door-to-door body temperature check. A 6-year-old child opened the door and told the volunteer that his grandpa died a few days ago.
The volunteer called the police immediately. Later on, the police, some hospital staff and managers all showed up. When the child was asked why he did not get help from others, the boy said that his grandfather told him not to go out because of the viruses. He had been eating cookies to survive.
After the old man died in his bathroom, the boy covered his body with a quilt.
We don’t know where the boy’s parents are. But it is quite common in China for old people to take care of their grandchildren.
